In 1970, Atlanta Presbytery formed a task force on world hunger in response to the previous year’s General Assembly concern”that world hunger is so real and grave that the problem is a top priority concern of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. and that all possible resources for at least the next five years must be focused on ways and means of dealing with this problem.”
For the next several years, this task force sponsored hunger projects, including media programs on hunger, Meals-on-Wheels programs and advocacy work
It became apparent by early 1976 that the General Assembly priority on hunger would continue; so the task force began planning for a major emphasis to be supported by the whole presbytery. The result was a well-developed plan the the Atlanta Presbytery would support a three-year world hunger program to include projects in Ghana, West AFrica and Atlanta. The presbytery endorsed the plan overwhelmingly and Pressbyterian Answer to Hunger, PATH, came into existence.
During 1982 the PATH Committee proposed to Council and presbytery that PATH be continued as a permanent program of presbytery. During the 1990s PATH’s international hunger work shifted to Central America and Israel/Palestine. Today PATH continues with a broad vision of addressing the root causes of hunger around the world.
Oversight of the PATh Committee’s work is the responsibilty of the Outreach Ministry Team and the Associate Executive Presbyter for Missions and Institutions. Membership on the PATH Committee is open to any member of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta interested in hunger and poverty issues. Please join us in our work!
