A program of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Hunger Program, Joining Hands approaches international hunger ministry in a new way by building bridges of solidarity betweeen PC(USA) presbyteries and overseas country “networks.” Networks are made up of churches, non-governmental organizations and grassroots groups involved in the alleviation of hunger in specific communities. As relationships grow between the partners, strategies are developed to address the systemic causes of hunger and poverty in these communities.
The Palestine/Greater Atlanta partnership, named Joining Hands for Justice, by our Palestinian partners, is in its seventh year of development. Four congregations, North Decatur, Oakhurst, St. Andrews(Tucker) and Trinity (Atlanta) plus several individuals make up the Atlanta Partner Committee. The Palestine Country Network includes the Palestinian Working Women’s Society for Development, and the Democracy and Workers Rights Center in Ramallah, West Bank; the YWCA of Palestine; and the International Center , Wi’am Center for Peace and Reconciliation and Bethlehem Bible College in Bethlehem.
Partner activities to date have included educational events/classes, advocacy work to end the Israeli Occupation, presbytery trips to Israel and Palestine, network representative visits to the presbytery, promotion of Palestinian crafts and products and construction of a Palestinian house in the Global Village at Calvin Center.
